SB260: a second chance for juveniles sentenced to life without parole

Senate Bill 260 will enable youth sentenced to Life Without Parole and other very long sentences to petition for re-sentencing after serving a lengthy sentence. Mr. Hammond lobbied Sacramento legislators and worked with community organizations to help get this bill passed. It provides an opportunity for parole for people who were under age 18 at the time of their offenses — most of whom were not the primary perpetrator of their offenses. We look forward to working with youth offenders to help them show that they are not dangerous to society and that they should be given a second chance at life outside of prison walls.

Effect of Senate Bill 260

The Board of Parole Hearings will now start conducting juvenile parole hearings under Senate Bill 260, wherein commissioners have to take into account the offender’s young age at the time of the life crime.  Mr. Hammond is experienced with preparing clients for parole hearings and helping them transition successfully back into society.  For more information, check out our Parole Law page.
